Nikon goes into overdrive: Launches 7 cameras and a service!

After the major announcement event by Nokia on August 29, it was the turn of photography major Nikon to announce its new range of products that included seven new cameras and a photosharing service, my Picturetown. The range of cameras launched include the Coolpix L14, L15, S51c/S51, S510, S700, S50 and P5100.

Advances in IT have ushered in the age of the ubiquitous network offering users connectivity anytime and anywhere, but integrated services that cover the whole range from taking photos to storing, viewing, and sending have not yet emerged in the photo world. Noting this fact, Nikon began exploring the possibility of deploying a new global service that would organically link digital cameras, computers, and mobile phones.

Developed through the use of Wi-Fi technology improved by a number of original Nikon refinements, my Picturetown enables the direct transfer of pictures to the Internet and supports picture transfer to various imaging devices as well as Internet services. Photos taken with a digital camera can now be stored by connecting directly to the Internet without using a computer, and uploaded pictures can be viewed with mobile phones and shown by posting them to blogs or social networking services (SNS). Nikon thus proposes a service that allows users to enjoy photos "anytime, anywhere" through the simple and stress-free use of these functions.

Coolpix L14/L15

A quality compact digital camera that combines high performance with operating ease while also providing the staying power of long battery life. Built on a custom application of Nikon’s innovative EXPEED digital image processing concept and incorporating the precision optics of a NIKKOR lens, The COOLPIX L14 is built to realize optimum performance and maximum image quality.

The COOLPIX L14 makes full use of its 7.1 effective megapixels of imaging power to capture true-to-life color with enough fine details that it leaves plenty of freedom to crop or produce enlargements. This pairs with the precision optics of a 3x Zoom-NIKKOR lens that covers a practical range from 38-114mm (35mm equivalent) to ably capture everything from group shots to close-up portraits. Extended light sensitivity as high as ISO 1600 prevents blurred shots when shooting in lower light, or when capturing fast-moving subjects.

Built-in Wi-Fi support brings Internet connectivity to the COOLPIX S51c for even greater fun and freedom. Upload shots to directly from the camera to Nikon’s my Picturetown server for anytime access using Nikon’s Picture Bank function, upload them directly to a blog, or use Picture Mail to trigger an email notification to friends anywhere when new pictures are available to view and download. And both models include Pictmotion, which lets users create entertaining audiovisual shows for enjoyment anywhere by simply selecting favorite images and movies, then combining them with music and visual styles. Coolpix S510

The COOLPIX S510 teams 8.1 effective megapixels of sharp resolution with the precision optics of its 3x Zoom-NIKKOR lens and a new digital image-processing engine that not only delivers the high performance to produce photos with clarity and true-to-life color, but also realizes ultra-swift response that makes the camera a delight to use. Extended light sensitivity up to ISO 2000 prevents blurred shots when shooting in lower light, or when capturing fast-moving subjects.

Quality materials and craftsmanship have created an elegant design housed in a stainless steel body. The solid metallic feel and a reassuringly firm hold immediately convey the functional beauty and classic camera appeal of the most compact digital camera among competing models. The same dedication to engineering excellence is also found in the slim design of the Zoom- NIKKOR lens and its image-stabilizing optical lens shift VR (Vibration Reduction) unit. In some regions, the COOLPIX S510 will be available in a choice of Silver, Pink and Urban Black body colors. [Press Release]

Coolpix S700

The COOLPIX S700 sets a rare example by delivering photographic performance that exceeds expectations of the smallest body among competing compact digital cameras. Imaging power begins with a full 12.1 effective megapixels of sharp resolution from the new 1/1.72-inch CCD image sensor and precision optics of a 3x Zoom-NIKKOR lens. Completing the set is a new digital image processing engine that not only delivers the high performance to reproduce these high-resolution images with clarity and true-to-life color, but also to realize delightfully fast camera response.

The stylish contours and fine finish of the COOLPIX S700’s aluminum body also conceals the heart of a true high performance camera, one designed to free users to enjoy being part of the experience while capturing special moments at will. The COOLPIX S700 powers up within 0.9 seconds. And its practically imperceptible shutter release time lag is 0.005 seconds or less.

Quality operation and controls receive as much attention. For example, the 2.7-inch LCD monitor offers a bright and large image that makes it a pleasure to use, even out in the sun.
