Last week at the Mobile World Congress 2009, the GSMA announced the winner of the 2009 Mobile Innovation Global Award.

Last week at the Mobile World Congress 2009, the GSMA announced the winner of the 2009 Mobile Innovation Global Award. After a year-long search and four regional tournaments, soft keyboard for touchscreens supplier CooTek has been named the Global Champion of this most influential innovation award in the mobile industry.

CooTek’s winning innovation is called TouchPal, a soft keyboard for touchscreen devices. Its mistyping correction and many other unique technologies make TouchPal one of the most popular keyboard software in the world, with more than 2,000,000 downloads last year. CooTek claims that an experienced user can type as fast as 400 characters/min. on a touchscreen with TouchPal.

Touchscreen phones are getting popular these years. But typing on touchscreen is no fun. Many iPhone users, for example, have complaints about its onscreen keyboard. Due to the small buttons and the lack of key-pressing feedback, users are more likely to press wrong keys on a virtual keyboard than on a real keyboard.

TouchPal was carefully designed to resolve these issues by introducing many breakthrough technologies. One example is the impressive mistyping correction technology — even if a user mistypes all the letters in a word, it can still predict the correct word. One can thus type much faster without even looking at the keyboard. Another eye-catching feature is called “mixed language input” — for example, a user can input German and English at the same time, without switching languages. TouchPal also recognizes gestures on the touchscreen to quickly input uppercase letters or symbols.

The continuous innovation and the significant user impact of this piece of innovative work impressed the judges’ panel consisting of the senior executives from mobile operators, industry suppliers and venture capital organizations. TouchPal supports 20+ languages and is available on Windows Mobile and Google Android phones. End users can download and try it for free from CooTek’s website: http://www.cootek.com

In Barcelona last night INQ Mobile won the GSMA’s award for “Best Mobile Handset or Device” for its INQ1 Social Mobile.

In Barcelona last night INQ Mobile won the GSMA’s award for “Best Mobile Handset or Device” for its INQ1 Social Mobile. This award is the most coveted and fiercely contested prize in the mobile industry and is given to a device with the combination of design, technical excellence and functionality that comes together to position a product at the top of its market. The INQ1 won the award over four other shortlisted contenders including the Nokia E71, T-Mobile G1, RIM BlackBerry Storm and LG KS360.

INQ Mobile, a new Hutchison Whampoa company, is creating a category of consumer devices that put social networking, email and instant messaging at the heart of innovative mass-market mobiles. The company launched the INQ1 in October of 2008 and it became known as the world’s first Facebook phone.

“INQ Mobile was formed by Hutchison Whampoa as part of a two-fold 3G strategy; to maximize the user experience of wireless broadband through extensive high-speed coverage and a flat rate data plan and to create innovative yet affordable devices. The way people communicate has evolved, but mass market devices have remained anchored to just voice and text. INQ set out to change this. We created a new mobile device platform that would transform the consumer experience with always-on, easy to use, Internet driven communication services, and we designed it to deliver positive economics to operators,” said Frank Meehan, CEO of INQ Mobile. “We are proud of having introduced Social Mobile to the market and very honoured that our first device has received such recognition.”

“More than 20 million Facebook users currently access the site through their mobile devices. This number has quadrupled over the last 12 months and we expect it to continue to grow as more people begin to connect with their friends and family through Facebook on innovative mobile devices, like the INQ1,” said Henri Moissinac, director of mobile, Facebook. “Congratulations to the INQ team for being recognized for the hard work they put into bringing a standout device to market.”

The INQ1 is an HSDPA handset that provides one-click access to fully integrated applications including Facebook, Skype, Windows Messenger and Last.fm. The intuitive navigation offered by the switcher key and menu carousel, along with instant information provided by the home screen widgets and the integrated phonebook, deliver an experience so intuitive that it’s easy and fun to stay connected. The INQ1 has a 3.2MP camera that allows for photos to be directly uploaded to Facebook, while preloaded modem drivers mean the handset can double as a plug and play dongle.

“INQ1 is the first device to have unlocked mobile social networking on a mass market handset to this extent, and Qualcomm’s integrated chipset technology and BREW software have enabled INQ to meet not only the increasing demands of ever-richer user interfaces, but also the capability to deliver the upload and download speeds that has enabled INQ Mobile to realise the potential in mobile social networking. Qualcomm is proud to have played a role in the development of the INQ1 device that is being recognized by the GSMA, an exceptional accomplishment,” said Enrico Salvatori, SVP and General Manager, Qualcomm Europe.

Nokia's long standing commitment to environmental action has been recognized at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona where the company received the GSMA's first award for Outstanding Environmental Contribution.

Nokia’s long standing commitment to environmental action has been recognized at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona where the company received the GSMA’s first award for Outstanding Environmental Contribution. The company also walked away with the award for the Best Mobile Internet Service for the Nokia Sports Tracker.

Accepting the Environmental Award Nokia’s CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said, “It is an honor to accept this on behalf of the thousands of Nokia people who have made sustainable, environmentally sensitive practices an integral part of our day to day business. With more than a billion people using Nokia phones globally, we feel we have a responsibility to make a difference.” He added, “Environmental sustainability is not just the right thing to do, it is the only thing to do. I have long maintained that doing the right thing for the environment also makes good business sense.”

In the category of Best Mobile Internet Service, Nokia Sports Tracker beat a tough group of competitors to take the award. The free application, first launched in July 2008 and downloaded more than 2.5 million times to date, monitors exercise and tracks fitness levels, and makes the information available to share with friends and training partners.

Nokia global environmental program was awarded as the best in the industry due to its global scale and commitment. The company set up its first recycling scheme for old or unwanted mobile devices in 1997 and today has the industry’s largest voluntary scheme operating in 85 countries around the world.

The GSMA also highlighted Nokia’s commitment to considering the environment across its entire product range. The company has deployed range of environmental elements in its devices including reducing charger no load energy consumption by 90% adding alerts to remind people to unplug their chargers once the battery is full, making up to 80% of any Nokia device recyclable, and phasing out the use of materials like PVC.

Nokia’s commitment to working with suppliers, operator, and other manufacturers to reduce the industry’s overall footprint was praised by the GSMA.

Last year Nokia led the development of an industry wide energy ranking for chargers helping consumers to choose the most efficient chargers and encouraging the industry as a whole to further increase energy efficiency.

Nokia Siemens Networks was highlighted for its industry contribution in making energy efficient base stations that reduce site level power consumption by up to 70 percent, enabling a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of mobile operators around the world.

Microsoft is showcasing the next generation of Windows® phones, introducing new mobile services for Windows® phones and highlighting strong momentum for its family of Windows Live mobile services.

This week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft is showcasing the next generation of Windows® phones, introducing new mobile services for Windows® phones and highlighting strong momentum for its family of Windows Live mobile services. PressPass sat down with Bart Wojciehowski, general manager for Mobile Services within Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business, to learn more about how mobile services fits into Microsoft’s integrated PC, Web and mobile strategy.

PressPass: It sounds like services are becoming more important to Microsoft’s mobile strategy. Can you explain what you are doing in this space?

Wojciehowski: You bet. First off, it’s really exciting to be part of Microsoft’s mobile services efforts right now. People all over the world are looking to mobile services to improve the way they find and share information, stay in touch with the people they care about, and have fun on their phones. The services they are looking for on the phone are frequently the same ones they use and are familiar with on the Web and PC, such as Windows Live Hotmail, Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Spaces, Windows Live Photo Gallery, MSN, Search and more. This gives Microsoft an incredible opportunity –– to deliver great mobile offerings for these services in ways that help people make the most of their mobile experience.

Microsoft is also making a huge bet on the next generation of Windows® phones, and mobile services are at the core of the experience. Mobile services like the ones I mentioned and new ones we’re announcing this week are tightly integrated into the entire Windows® phone experience. This allows people to connect their PC, Web and phone experience in new ways that will greatly enhance the way they use their phones every day.

PressPass: Can you tell us a bit more about the two new services CEO Steve Ballmer announced at Microsoft’s Mobile World Congress press conference: My Phone and Windows Marketplace for Mobile?

Wojciehowski: Sure. Our mobile services engineering, product management and marketing teams have been working very hard on these new services. We’re excited that we’ll be able to deliver them to customers this year.

Specifically, Steve previewed two new services that will be shipped on Windows® phones this year. The first is a service called Microsoft My Phone, which syncs text messages, photos, video and contacts to the Web. This is a free service that allows people to access, manage and back up their personal information on their device to the Web, making it easier to upgrade their phones without the worry of losing important information. Consumers will also be able to wirelessly update photos and video from their Windows® phone directly to the My Phone service, making it simple to share content that, in the past, would have lived and died on the phone. It’s important to note that the My Phone service is available in a limited invitation-only beta right now.

The second new service is Windows Marketplace for Mobile, a rich and integrated place for searching, browsing and purchasing mobile applications from Windows® phones or from a PC. The new marketplace will be available with all Windows® phones based on Windows Mobile 6.5, which will allow consumers to easily find, install and experience applications that fit their needs and make the phone truly personal.

PressPass: Can you tell us more about how the Windows Live mobile services are doing?

Wojciehowski: The Windows Live and MSN family of mobile services are doing really well right now. As you know, these services have been around for some time and they are picking up incredible momentum around the world. An increasing number of our 500 million Windows Live users on the PC are starting to engage in their favorite Windows Live services on their phone. There are a range of ways people can take advantage of Windows Live on their phone –– from feature-rich client suites to services optimized for use through the mobile internet browser and alerts delivered via text messages to the phone.

PressPass: Microsoft is highlighting Windows Live momentum, especially in the partner space with mobile operators and ISVs. It sounds like partners are an important part of the Windows Live mobile services business. Can you tell us more about those relationships and what it means for Windows Live mobile?

Wojciehowski: Partners are definitely a big part of our business. The only way we are able to effectively deliver our Windows Live experience to the vast majority of people around the world is in conjunction with our mobile operator and independent software vendor (ISV) partners. To give you and idea of how important our partners are, we have more than 100 mobile operators delivering Windows Live services in more than 45 countries. We also have over 100 different development partners working with us to build great Windows Live experiences on hundreds of mobile handsets around the world.

What we’ve announced at the Mobile World Congress are several very important mobile operator and ISV relationships that will significantly expand our ability to engage customers. This is particularly true in Latin America, where we’re extending our collaboration with mobile operators América Móvil, Telefonica, Personal S.A. and Movistar. Taken together, these alliances will help ensure that Windows Live mobile services, MSN Mobile, Live Search and others are offered and promoted to Windows Live users in more than 20 countries and on over 300 million mobile phones.

We’re also excited to extend our partnership with Gemalto, the world’s largest SIM card provider. It is currently offering a SIM-based client solution for Messenger in Latin America. This broader global relationship promises to make Windows Live Messenger available on millions of mass-market handsets in the next few years.

PressPass: Aside from partner momentum, are there any new product upgrades we should know about?

Wojciehowski: There are several things to highlight that pertain to recent service enhancements. The first is the new mobile.live.com home page. This is a new hub for a person’s entire Windows Live experience, bringing together feeds from Hotmail, Messenger buddies, personal and friends’ photos, MSN and other information sources. This one unified page will help people stay connected to the people and information they care about.

This week we’re also introducing an enhanced Windows Live Hotmail alert service. This will allow people to be notified with a text message when they receive an e-mail from a particular contact. For example, you could set up the system so you receive text message alerts when you get an e-mail from a specific family member — like your brother. From there, people can click on a link included in the text message to easily access Hotmail from the mobile Internet browser on their phone. Last, we’re introducing other Windows Live alerts that send people their Windows Live contact and calendar information and give them the ability to change their personal status on Instant Messenger through text messages.

Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile) and T-Mobile USA, along with photographer and model Helena Christensen today officially unveiled the Samsung Memoir™, a touch-screen phone with an impressive 8-megapixel camera for premium imaging functionality, to be available exclusively through T-Mobile USA beginning February 25, 2009.

Christensen was the first to gain hands-on experience with the Memoir, using it as her official phone and camera to shoot images during her travels around New York and Barcelona. “As a photographer it was great for me to be the first to try the Memoir and to really experience everything it is capable of doing,” said Christensen. “It’s very important that my mobile phone also double up as a great camera, that way I always have my camera on hand to capture images at any moment. That’s what a big part of photography is about.” Christensen shared her images exclusively at the Memoir unveil event this evening in Barcelona.

The Memoir is designed to bring a high-quality digital imaging experience to the convenience of your mobile phone. The built-in 8-megapixel camera comes equipped with best-in-class digital imaging features, including Xenon flash, CMOS auto focus and 16x digital zoom. Accessing the Memoir’s camera menu, users can adjust the brightness and flash, change the default destination of images, select a timer and zoom in or out. In addition, the Memoir’s camera:
• Allows users to set special effects on an image, including black and white, sepia, negative and watercolor;
• Features blink detection, face detection, anti-shake to reduce blur, and geo-tagging, which records coordinate information of where the user is at the time the picture is taken into the image files;
• Provides optimal settings for a variety of shooting situations to help capture the best possible image, including portrait, landscape, night, sports, party/indoor, beach snow, sunset, dawn, fall color, fireworks and backlight;
• Automatically changes the white balance using the setting appropriate for the light source, including daylight, incandescent, fluorescent or cloudy;
• Features five different shooting modes, including single, continuous, panorama, smile shot and mosaic.

Users can also record video for up to 60 minutes depending on the resolution format. The Memoir allows users to even create customized slideshows of their images with music and different transitions. With the TV-out feature, users can share custom slideshows, video or images on a television for everyone to enjoy. The Memoir’s proximity sensor works to automatically adjust the backlight when using the phone’s camera in different environments, as well as lock the LCD screen when brought to the user’s ear when making or receiving calls.

The Memoir features Samsung’s TouchWiz™ user interface, including two new widgets that give one-touch access to information and entertainment. The online weather widget connects to The Weather Channel automatically for updated weather information and forecasts in the user’s city. The camera widget provides instant access to the user’s pictures and camera functionality such as slideshow, as well as their favorite online photo sharing resource, including flickr®, Kodak Gallery®, Photobucket and Snapfish. With full HTML web browsing capabilities and T-Mobile’s 3G network, users can also download images or videos and instantly make updates to social networking sites. In addition, the Memoir features a music and video player, as well as multiple messaging capabilities, full touch virtual QWERTY keypad with haptic feedback and Assisted GPS.

The Memoir will be exclusively available through T-Mobile USA beginning February 25, 2009. For more information and to see Christensen’s images taken with the Memoir visit, www.samsung.com/newsroom.

T-Mobile’s 3G coverage available in select markets. Samsung Memoir also works on T-Mobile’s 2G network.

Skype and Nokia today announced a partnership that will bring the world’s leading Internet communications experience to the Nokia range of mobile computers.

Skype and Nokia today announced a partnership that will bring the world’s leading Internet communications experience to the Nokia range of mobile computers. Under the terms of the cooperation, Skype™ will be integrated into Nokia devices, starting with the Nokia Nseries. The Nokia N97 flagship device will be the first to incorporate the Skype experience in the 3rd quarter of 2009.

The Skype experience will be part of the address book of the Nokia N97, enabling presence – seeing when Skype contacts are online – as well as instant messaging. Nokia N97 owners around the world will also be able to use 3G and WLAN to easily make and receive free Skype-to-Skype voice calls, in addition to low-cost Skype calls to landlines and mobile devices.

“Making Skype available everywhere through mobile devices is essential to fulfilling our vision of ‘enabling the world’s conversations’,” said Scott Durchslag, Skype’s Chief Operating Officer. “Collaborating closely with Nokia to preload and integrate our software onto their devices will benefit the many Nokia customers who already use Skype, as it makes Skype easily accessible and simple to use on the go. It will also bring Skype new users who love Nokia’s Symbian S60 experience.”

“With more than 400 million Skype users worldwide, the integration of Skype on Nokia Nseries mobile computers is a significant step in bringing converged Internet experiences from the desktop to the world’s most advanced mobile computer,” said Jose-Luis Martinez, Vice President, Nokia Nseries.

Mobixell Networks has announced a new multimedia messaging support package that enables iPhone users to send and receive MMS messages to and from any device.

Mobixell Networks, a leading provider of innovative mobile multimedia and advertising solutions, has announced a new multimedia messaging support package that enables iPhone users to send and receive MMS messages to and from any device. Mobixell’s MMS iPhone solution, an add-on to Mobixell’s Rich Media Service Centre™ (RMSC) which is already widely installed in mobile operator’s networks worldwide, encourages traffic increase for the operator by enabling an MMS style experience via email for the end user. This includes, retaining the original rich media presentation experience, the forwarding of email to MMS to any device and retaining the iPhone profile usage for media adaptation.

The previous absence of support for MMS by the iPhone has been a source of much frustration for both subscribers and their friends. This new solution enables MMS messages to be sent to any private e-mail address and also enables text and image attachments that can be embedded within the message body for improving and optimising the user-experience. Other attachments such as audio and video can be presented as clickable icons with no application installation required. One of the other key features is the ‘easy to reply’ MMS service. Based on Opt-In users Database, the Mobixell MMS iPhone solution replaces the iPhone Mobile Station Internet Subscriber Directory Number (MSISDN) with the registered primary email address and adapts the sender and additional recipients to enable easy-reply.

Avichai Levy, Executive VP of Marketing for Mobixell stated, “The Mobixell scalable solution means that iPhone users will be able to enjoy the best possible rich media experience of sending and receiving MMS messages from their friends regardless of their device or network. Mobixell, as leader in the Mobile Multimedia area, bridges the traditional Multimedia Messaging world and the iPhone world, helping Mobile Operators to provide their users with the best user experience, regardless of their handset.”
