ASUS, which reshaped the notebook industry with innovations such as the use of genuine Moso bamboo paneling on notebooks, today showcased two new finishes that do much more than just beautify its products: Satin-brushed Aluminum and NeoWood.

ASUS, which reshaped the notebook industry with innovations such as the use of genuine Moso bamboo paneling on notebooks, today showcased two new finishes that do much more than just beautify its products: Satin-brushed Aluminum and NeoWood. The Satin-brushed Aluminum finish, produced through Non-conductive Vapor Metallization (NCVM) technology, not only infuses treated surfaces with an elegant satin-brushed pattern, it provides scratch resistance, enhances the structural strength of the notebook, and improved wireless and Bluetooth performance.

The NeoWood finishing technique, which produces a high-strength wood grain veneer that looks and feels like real wood, is a first for the consumer electronics industry. It delivers all the benefits of real wood, including premium looks and natural tactility, while maintaining a level of resilience that far surpasses that of regular wood.

ASUS notebooks featuring the Satin-brushed Aluminum finish include the N81Vf, N60Sf and N51Vn, while the NeoWood finish can be enjoyed on the N60Sf.

Satin-brushed Aluminum

The result of an innovative application of Non-conductive Vapor Metallization (NCVM) technology, ASUS’ Satin-brushed Aluminum finish is a perfect example of form meeting function. It preserves the elegant coloration, luster and satin-brushed pattern of real brushed aluminum, yet offers vastly improved scratch resistance and strength. Another benefit of the Satin-brushed Aluminum finish is that it eliminates the interference of RF signals, which other metalized finishes such as aluminum cannot do. As a result, notebooks boasting the Satin-brushed Aluminum finish enjoy substantially improved 3D antenna efficiency and therefore greatly enhanced Wi-Fi and Bluetooth performance. ASUS notebooks featuring the Satin-brushed Aluminum finish include the N81Vf, N60Sf and N51Vn.

NeoWood

ASUS’ NeoWood finish combines the familiarity and comfortable tactility of natural wood with the high tensile strength of modern synthetics. It looks and feels exactly like the wood used in high-end furniture, yet has much-improved hardness, friction resistance and abrasion resistance properties than regular wood. Notebooks that feature the NeoWood finish, such as the ASUS N60Sf, not only look breathtaking, they are structurally stronger as well.

ASUS, widely recognized as a company at the forefront of innovation, today introduced a myriad of mobile and home computing devices and concepts specifically designed to provide users with a truly seamless computing experience.

ASUS, widely recognized as a company at the forefront of innovation, today introduced a myriad of mobile and home computing devices and concepts specifically designed to provide users with a truly seamless computing experience. COMPUTEX 2009 served as the perfect platform for ASUS to share its ‘Seamless Experience’ vision, one which seeks to realize a truly intuitive and effortless computing lifestyle with minimal human intervention. Also showcased was Eee Life, a constellation of Eee products that feature intuitive touch input as well as robust wireless capabilities and Internet connectivity. Products in the spotlight included the recently announced Eee PC™ Seashell Series, the Eee Videophone Touch SV1T, and the EeeTop PC ET20/22.

The ‘Seamless Experience’ Concept: Communication without Boundaries

The ‘Seamless Experience’ concept is the result of the collated feedback, suggestions and recommendations of users around the world submitted via WePC.com, a joint initiative between ASUS and Intel®. As a true innovator in the modern digital era, ASUS relentlessly strives to design and build the ‘dream PC’, as well as simplify the way users communicate with one another and the devices that enable them to do so. ASUS is committed to the pursuit of providing users with a computing experience that is more flexible and intuitive—one which seamlessly melds effortless social communication and high performance.

The ‘Seamless Experience’ concept is a revolutionary, advanced research initiative that leads the way forward in the new digital era. It bridges the gap in communications between users, as well as devices and the differences between virtual and physical space. The concept introduces four key design thrusts that simplify the way users utilize their PCs, communicate and share data with one another. First, it introduces seamless communications between people and devices. For example, notebooks in close proximity could communicate with one another and files such as photographs can be automatically transferred from one notebook to another. Second, it combines information from several points of origin, or even from a piece of paper, and then transforms it into a digital file which can then be shared with friends and family on a large table interface. This provides users with seamless flexibility, in the knowledge that whatever format of data they bring to the table, it can be shared easily and intuitively.

The ‘Seamless Experience’ also allows users to maximize the potential of their devices by remotely leveraging on a super computer, allowing them to have always-on access to their multimedia files, important work or personal data without having to carry an otherwise heavy notebook. Finally, a seamless data flow allows users to sync their PDAs, mobile phones, PCs and notebooks, so users can work on a file and its edits can then be synchronized throughout all the devices. It is also capable of analyzing data from non-digital formats, such as information scribbled on a piece of paper, and the computer is able to discern its handwriting and store it into the system for future use.

With the ‘Seamless Experience’ concept, ASUS is forging a way toward a future of truly effortless intuitive computing, communications and data sharing.
Eee Life: A Suite of Easy-to-use Eee Products for a Seamless Lifestyle

Since its introduction in the last quarter of 2007, the Eee PC™—and subsequent Eee products—have grown from strength to strength with numerous accolades from the world’s media. Eee products not only enable users to learn, but also communicate across boundaries and enjoy multimedia entertainment. More than that, the Eee family of products is designed to permeate through the very fabric of everyday life, making day to day computing, communications and entertainment that much more effortless and—most importantly—seamless.

Fugoo, in conjunction with Microsoft's keynote at Computex Taipei 2009, announces the launch of its "open" hardware and software platform for its new category of smart and Internet connected devices for the home.

Fugoo, in conjunction with Microsoft’s keynote at Computex Taipei 2009, announces the launch of its “open” hardware and software platform for its new category of smart and Internet connected devices for the home. Fugoo Founders, John Hui and Wayne Inouye, formerly of eMachines and Gateway computers, “have brought the team back together” to introduce a new category of devices that redefine the way users interact with the Web at home. Together with Microsoft and VIA Technologies (VIA), Fugoo’s vision of smart and Internet connected devices brings users beyond personal and portable computers to a new range of attractive devices whose users, environment and situation dictate their utility.

Like a mobile app store, these devices are highly customizable experiences that are driven by the applications and content a user chooses. Whether it’s in the kitchen for recipes, cooking videos, shopping lists and coupons or on the night-stand for alarm clock, weather, and news feeds, the form factor and user experience is controlled by the user. This level of personalization is enabled by an open SDK and API for 3rd party software developers and a hardware connector that lets any OEM make their product smart and internet connected. Through its platform, Fugoo will introduce devices that are only limited by the imagination of the world’s software developers and OEMs.

“Today’s connected consumer’s desire for information, services, and entertainment at their fingertips is fuelling a new market for hyper-intelligent and customizable home appliances,” says John Hui. “Fugoo’s devices unleash the power of the Internet and widgets to every room in the home with highly applicable services.”

“Combining Fugoo’s platform with Microsoft Windows provides a simple, familiar experience for consumers,” says Steve Guggenheimer, corporate vice president of the Original Equipment Manufacturer Division at Microsoft. “It’s exciting to think about how this opens up a world of possibilities for simplifying the way people interact with devices in their homes.”

Fugoo’s new devices can be seen at the Microsoft “Windows Makes Life Simpler” keynote on June 3rd at Computex Taipei 2009 in Taipei, Taiwan. Fugoo devices will also be on display at the VIA booth in the Taipei International Convention Center 2nd Floor, Room 201D.

Today during a keynote address at Computex 2009 in Taipei, Microsoft’s OEM Division Corporate Vice President Steve Guggenheimer revealed that the company is confident with the progress made with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

Today during a keynote address at Computex 2009 in Taipei, Microsoft’s OEM Division Corporate Vice President Steve Guggenheimer revealed that the company is confident with the progress made with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, and that as a result, Microsoft will deliver Release to Manufacturing (RTM) code to partners in the second half of July. Windows 7 will become generally available on Oct. 22, 2009, and Windows Server 2008 R2 will be broadly available at the same time.

“As we’ve said many times, quality is our primary goal,” Guggenheimer said. “We announce each milestone once we’re confident of where we are in the development cycle and that it is ready to be shared with customers and partners. We’ve received great feedback from our partners who are looking forward to offering Windows 7 to their customers in time for the holidays.”

In addition to this, Guggenheimer announced that Microsoft will make available an upgrade option, so partners can offer customers the ability to purchase a Windows Vista-based PC and install Windows 7 when it’s ready.

“Microsoft has been working closely with partners to help our mutual customers be able to enjoy the many benefits of Windows 7,” he said. “With that in mind, we’re excited to say that there will be a Windows upgrade program available. Consumers can buy that new PC, whether for a student heading off to college or just because they need a new one, and know they’ll get Windows 7 as part of the deal.”

The actual start date for the program will be announced when it is ready for consumers, and partners are ready to provide details to customers.

Today’s keynote address is Guggenheimer’s second at Computex. The last time he spoke at the show, he had just taken over the helm of OEM, the division that works with hardware manufacturers worldwide to integrate Microsoft technologies and bring PCs, laptops, mobile handsets and other devices to life.

Although the economic realities of the past year have created new challenges for customers, partners and the IT industry, Guggenheimer says the power of innovation, through both software and broad collaboration with partners, will continue to benefit consumers, the industry and the economy at large.

“What we’re doing with Windows will continue to improve people’s lives so that that technology enables them to communicate better, make tasks simpler and new things possible,” he says. “Our partners in the hardware space, our competitors in software — the entire industry is doing incredible things.”

Casting a Wider Net

To illustrate the point, Guggenheimer points to the evolution of small notebook PCs (often referred to as netbook PCs), the ensuing emergence of a new class of “consumer Internet devices,” and Microsoft’s collaboration with “smart” appliance maker Fugoo LLC, which was first announced at CES in January.

The broad adoption, Guggenheimer says, shows that small notebooks are answering a market need, especially given the economic situation. It also reflects that they have evolved a great deal in a short time to become powerful personal computers as opposed to the basic Web-surfing tools they were initially.

“A year ago when these smaller PCs first came onto the scene, many in the space were saying consumers wouldn’t want or need these devices to be full-featured,” he says. “In fact, the exact opposite turned out to be true. Consumers really do want small notebook PCs to work like their laptops and desktops. Windows provides a familiar and easy-to-use experience that consumers want and demand from these devices.”

Asked why consumers are choosing smaller PCs with Windows, Guggenheimer says, “Because Windows makes life simple. It’s easier to use, just works out of the box with people’s stuff, and ultimately offers more choice. Over the last 34 years, we’ve learned a lot about what people want from their PCs, and we’ve worked with OEMs to provide an experience that meets those needs.”

Guggenheimer says the economy may also be facilitating growth in the small notebook PC space. Buyers are becoming increasingly cost-conscious and mobile, and laptop sales are soon expected to outstrip desktop PC sales in developed economies.

“Fortunately, the breadth of the Windows platform gives device manufacturers a host of options when it comes to designing new devices to suit new forms of consumer demand,” he says.

Already, several OEMs have announced plans to issue new small notebook PCs designed for the Windows 7 operating system.

“They are finding that even on the scaled-down hardware of the small notebook PC platform, Windows is running smoothly and delivering the experience consumers are asking for because it just makes things simpler and tasks easier,” says Guggenheimer.

Devices Building New Market Segments

An example of new devices is in the broadening class of consumer Internet devices, which fall somewhere between smartphones and the full-featured small notebook PCs running Windows today.

“This next generation of smart, connected, service-oriented devices will give people mobile access to a rich set of media and information,” he says. “Using Microsoft technologies like Windows Embedded CE, Visual Studio, Silverlight and Expression Blend, we can enable devices such as personal navigation devices, portable media players, set-top boxes and networked TVs to provide a rich browsing experience and a dynamic, immersive user interface.”

Guggenheimer says the first such devices will connect to what Microsoft calls consumers’ “digital lifestyles,” such as files, pictures, music and video, that are currently stored primarily on Windows-based PCs.

“Soon these devices will become even more connected, working not only with PCs but also with cloud services from third parties and Microsoft, such as Windows Live Services,” he says.

At Computex this week, Kevin Dallas, general manager of the Windows Embedded Business, will showcase the potential of consumer Internet devices with a demonstration based on NVIDIA Tegra computer-on-a-chip technology, which works with the Windows Embedded CE platform for specialized, small-footprint devices.

Another bid to create a useful class of consumer devices is Fugoo. The Fugoo platform uses a version of Windows in conjunction with widely available Web “widgets,” which publish everything from the time and weather to currency exchange rates and horoscopes.

Fugoo’s prototype devices integrate that software functionality into home appliances to create dynamic displays in clocks, picture frames and even coffee makers.

At Computex, Fugoo is announcing that its first commercially available product, a digital picture frame launched in partnership with Pandigital in the U.S., will be available on the market this summer.

The frame is Web-enabled and can download photos from social networks or online photo services. It also allows users to download photos directly from a PC or digital camera.

Broad Partner Opportunity on Windows Platform

Whatever PC device consumers and businesses choose to use, ultimately, Guggenheimer says, Windows will support the entire spectrum of devices easily.

“With the release of Windows Server 2008 R2, companies of all sizes will get big improvements in virtualization, Web and management,” he says. “These areas, along with several features that improve scalability and reliability, help deliver a strong value proposition on the server side to complement Windows 7.”

To address OEMs’ request for a server product suited for smaller businesses, Guggenheimer points to the recent release of Windows Server 2008 Foundation. This will be offered pre-installed on hardware products from Acer Inc., Dell, Fujitsu Technology Solutions, HP, Lenovo, IBM Corp. and NEC Corp. later this year, and will be available initially in 40 countries and several languages.

“We expect this new server platform to be popular in markets across the globe, with its modest cost making it possible for small companies to grow, innovate and stay competitive, which in turn can ignite growth for their local economies,” he says.

OEMs will get another big boost with the Windows 7 Device Stage feature, which is expected to prove especially useful as more and more consumers hope to connect and use multifunction devices such as printers, cameras and cell phones with their PCs.

“Microsoft has been working to enable Windows to work well with all these devices for some time, and we think partners are ready and excited to deliver,” Guggenheimer says. “Ultimately our greatest strength here, both for us and our partners, is the depth and breadth of the Windows ecosystem — a universe that took more than three decades to build.”

AMD (NYSE: AMD) publicly demonstrated the world’s first Microsoft DirectX® 11 graphics processor.

AMD (NYSE: AMD) publicly demonstrated the world’s first Microsoft DirectX® 11 graphics processor. The series of demonstrations shed new light on the significantly improved computing experience set to debut at the end of 2009.1 The fusion of AMD’s new ground-breaking graphics processors with the forthcoming DirectX 11 programming interface is set to forever change both applications and PC gaming for the better. To illustrate, AMD showed numerous examples of faster application performance and new game features using the world’s first true DirectX 11 graphics processor.

* Get ready for a revolution: Games and other applications are about to get a lot better as a result of AMD’s new graphics hardware and DirectX 11. DirectX 11 features such as tessellation will bring consumers higher quality, superior performing games making use of 6th generation AMD technology. Another DirectX 11 feature, the compute shader, will enable AMD’s DirectX 11 graphics cards to help make Windows 7 run faster in a wide number of applications and in a manner that’s completely transparent to users, for example, in seamlessly accelerating the conversion of video for playback on portable media players through a drag-and-drop interface.2

* DirectX 11 done right on AMD: The development of DirectX 11 has been broadly influenced by AMD graphics technology. Each new version of DirectX builds on the versions that came before it, and many of the capabilities of DirectX 11 were pioneered on AMD GPUs, including DirectX 10.1, tessellation, compute shaders, Fetch4, custom filter anti-aliasing and high-definition ambient occlusion shading.

* Bringing consumers DirectX 11 sooner: The preview of the world’s first DirectX 11 graphics processor at Computex 2009 validates AMD’s commitment to delivering leading technologies to market before anyone else, and to continuing to foster innovation in computing.

* Fueling developer demand: It’s not just consumers who are excited about the prospects of DirectX 11, game developers are also incredibly enthusiastic about taking advantage of new DirectX 11 hardware to bring even better games to market, in large part due to AMD’s readiness to meet their DirectX 11 needs. Many developers have indicated their commitment to building DirectX 11 games initially on AMD’s DirectX 11 hardware, delivering superior performance and compatibility.

“AMD has a long track record of delivering pioneering features that have gone on to become mainstays in the DirectX experience, and we’re doing it again with two mature, AMD-developed technologies in DirectX 11 – tessellation and the compute shader – both of which enable a better DirectX 11 experience for consumers,” said Rick Bergman, Senior Vice President, AMD Products Group. “Today, we’re previewing AMD’s DirectX 11 graphics processor to build enthusiasm for this key technology so developers will have games available at launch and shortly thereafter. With the benefits it delivers to gaming, applications and Windows 7, developers are lining up to get their hands on our hardware, and we’re confident that consumers will too.”

SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) today announced that it has begun shipping its next-generation flash memory-based solid state drives (SSD) for netbooks, offering high-performance components at a competitive price.

SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) today announced that it has begun shipping its next-generation flash memory-based solid state drives (SSD) for netbooks, offering high-performance components at a competitive price. SanDisk® pSSD™ P2 and S2 employ a new technology called nCache™, which improves netbook performance. The drives will be demonstrated at the SanDisk booth at Computex, Taipei, June 2-6, 2009: Booth # N709 Nangang Hall, 4th floor.

Netbooks are small, low-cost computers that offer consumers a highly portable means of surfing the Internet, accessing email as well as enjoying their favorite music and videos on the go. Market researchers, IDC, project consumer purchases of netbooks to rise from 11.5 million sold in 2008 to 50 million in 20131. f

nCache: Advanced Technology for Faster Performance
SanDisk’s exclusive nCache technology is a non-volatile write cache capable of supporting burst performance up to five times the steady state vRPM2 to further enhance the user experience3. nCache improves user responsiveness and helps prevent incidence of “stalling” or “shuddering” often seen in first generation netbook SSDs.

The SanDisk pSSD P2 and S2 drives offer 9,000 vRPM of steady state performance in addition to nCache, which goes beyond this and offers a non-volatile cache of up to 320MB* to support bursts of random write commands maximizing system responsiveness. In addition, because nCache is non-volatile, the user’s data is protected in the event of a power interruption.

“Full-featured operating systems make tremendous demands in the storage device – writing large amounts of data in fast bursts using small random transfer sizes,” said Doreet Oren, director, product marketing, SanDisk. “SanDisk pSSD drives with nCache offer up to 50 times the random write performance of our first generation SSDs, delivering on the SSD promise for netbooks.”

Strategic Collaboration to Lower Netbook Costs
“As Netbooks migrate from retail stand-alone systems to operator-managed devices, many mobile network operators (MNOs) will consider Linux and netbooks with ARM processors for their low power consumption, low cost and greater customization capabilities,” said Tim Bajarin, president and principal analyst, Creative Strategies, Inc. “This enables key component suppliers to lower bill of materials costs without sacrificing performance or crucial equipment capabilities.”

Engineers from SanDisk and Canonical, the creator of the popular Ubuntu Linux-based operating system (OS), have worked closely on system optimizations for the Gen2 pSSD, resulting in improved system responsiveness and longer battery life.

“Canonical is enabling original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and designers (ODMs) to offer consumers a fantastic user experience with Ubuntu Netbook Remix running on netbooks,” said Chris Kenyon, director, OEM services, Canonical. “Our tests have shown SanDisk second generation pSSD equipped with nCache performing significantly better than a 5400 RPM HDD, providing Ubuntu users with the speed and stability that they need.”

SanDisk pSSDs are also ideal for use in netbooks equipped with ARM processors like Freescale’s i.MX515 device, which offers impressive performance at costs that let OEMs and ODMs meet critical price points. The processor’s advanced power management features extend battery life and eliminate the need for energy-sapping fans or costly heat sinks.

“All-day battery life is critical in the netbook space, where OEMs carefully evaluate each component for optimal energy efficiency,” said Glen Burchers, marketing director, consumer segment, Freescale. “Like Freescale’s i.MX51 processor, SanDisk’s pSSDs are designed with power management in mind, thus addressing critical market requirements.”

Availability
Available in capacities of 8, 16, 32 and 64-gigabytes (GB)*, SanDisk second-generation pSSD drives are attractively priced for segments such as Netbooks, POS terminals, printers, ATMs and other applications where users need HDD functionality with improved reliability, yet want to pay only for the exact capacity that they need.
