Seagate (NASDAQ: STX) today introduced a new backup appliance that completely eliminates the need to manually learn, manage, or dedicate any time to the backup process.

Continuing its commitment to helping people preserve, protect and enjoy their digital content, Seagate (NASDAQ: STX) today introduced a new backup appliance that completely eliminates the need to manually learn, manage, or dedicate any time to the backup process. Unlike most backup utilities, the new Seagate® Replica™ backup appliance is a complete PC backup system, which automatically and continuously stores up-to-date copies of everything on a PC, including installed applications, operating system, e-mail, pictures, music, movies, Internet bookmarks and settings.

“The computer continues to become an indispensable family tool for homework, e-mail, storing digital photos and downloading Internet videos,” said Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst, Parks Associates. “As consumers today continue to amass increasing volumes of digital content, having an easy, time-efficient way to backup computers in the home will become an imperative.”

Protecting digital assets and memories is important, but life is also increasingly busy. Research by Parks Associates indicates that one-third of consumers do not currently backup the content on their PCs, and of those that do backup, do so rarely because of the daunting, labor-and time-intensive task of burning CDs/DVDs or manually dragging-and-dropping individual files to flash drives. Some people simply don’t remember to backup their digital content. The Seagate Replica backup appliance breaks down these barriers by eliminating the effort – no lengthy installation, scheduling or drag-and-drop is required. With the Seagate Replica solution there is no need to spend time rifling through countless files, photos and folders to determine what has been or still needs to be saved; simply connect a single USB cable, click OK to the software license and the entire PC is backed up not just individual files and folders. After this simple action of accepting the software license, the Replica Backup System continues to run behind-the-scenes, so that no further interaction with the application is required. Additionally, when the Replica backup appliance is left connected to the computer, it will perform a continuous and complete backup of everything so the computer is not left vulnerable between backup events as it would be with scheduled software.

“While people continue to amass digital content, many still don’t understand the importance of backing up their libraries of personal memories, or they don’t take the time,” s said Rajesh Khurana, country manager of India and SAARC countries, Seagate Technology. “Our goal is to deliver solutions that provide thorough backup protection yet are easy to use, time-efficient and simple to understand, and the Seagate Replica is about as easy as it gets.”

Digital Life Insurance

Industry research estimates that a computer system crashes every 15 seconds and one out of five computers loses data as a result of a virus or crash. With the Seagate Replica, people no longer need to shed tears over lost files or valued family photos as a result of a computer failure or virus. Using the Replica backup system, people can now easily restore the entire contents of their PC, without having to spend countless hours manually installing applications and copying files, or hunting through stacks of CDs, flash drives and DVDs in the hope of finding all of their backed up files. Additionally, if a file is accidentally deleted, it can be easily retrieved. There is no complicated software or new user interface to learn.

A single-PC version of the Seagate Replica for use with individual laptop or desktop computers is available for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of Rs. 9,000 inclusive of taxes.

Scanbuy, Inc., the global leader in mobile barcode solutions, announces that its ScanLife mobile barcode application will be pre-loaded on Sony Ericsson camera enabled devices.

Scanbuy, Inc., the global leader in mobile barcode solutions, announces that its ScanLife mobile barcode application will be pre-loaded on Sony Ericsson camera enabled devices. Phones are already being sold with the embedded technology in Spain, Italy, and Mexico with more countries to follow in the coming months.

The ScanLife mobile application uses the camera phone to read all major 1D and 2D barcode formats including Datamatrix, EZcode, QR, UPC, and EAN. The application scans a code to immediately launch a specific action like displaying a website, loading a video, dialing a phone number and more. This makes all physical objects interactive and removes the need for a user to type long URL’s or search for information using keywords.

“Scanbuy and our partners are building a global infrastructure to make mobile barcode scanning completely ubiquitous and easy for the end-user,” said Jonathan Bulkeley, Chief Executive Officer of Scanbuy. “This partnership is already generating tangible results as people are using new Sony Ericsson phones today with our application.”

Telcel, the leading wireless provider in Mexico, is already pre-loading a number of phones with ScanLife. Coca-Cola, Nike, and Frito-Lay have used EZcodes on their marketing material including print advertisements and packaging.

The ScanLife solution is geographically interoperable using ScanLife’s Code Management Platform which generates codes and collects analytic data. The mobile application is supported by millions of mobile phones around the world and it is compatible with all major operating systems, including Android(TM), BlackBerry(TM), BREW(TM), iPhone(TM) OS, Java(TM), Symbian(TM) and Windows(TM). It can be downloaded for free from the phone’s browser at www.getscanlife.com.

NVIDIA announces work with Microsoft to promote NVIDIA® Tesla™ graphics processing units (GPUs) for high performance parallel computing using the Windows HPC Server 2008 operating system.

NVIDIA announces work with Microsoft to promote NVIDIA® Tesla™ graphics processing units (GPUs) for high performance parallel computing using the Windows HPC Server 2008 operating system.

“The coupling of GPUs and CPUs illustrates the enormous power and opportunity of multicore co-processing,” said Dan Reed, corporate vice president of Extreme Computing at Microsoft. “NVIDIA’s work with Microsoft and the Windows HPC Server platform, is helping enable scientists and researchers in many fields achieve supercomputer performance on diverse applications.”

NVIDIA Research developed several GPU-enabled applications on the Windows HPC Server 2008 platform, such as a ray tracing application that can be used for advanced photo-realistic modeling of automobiles. Related to this, NVIDIA worked with Microsoft Research to install a large Tesla GPU computing cluster and is studying applications that are optimized for the GPU.

In addition, a whole range of enterprise applications – such as data mining, machine learning and business intelligence, as well as scientific applications like molecular dynamics, financial computing and seismic processing – are taking advantage of the massively parallel CUDA™ architecture on which NVIDIA’s GPUs are based to achieve higher levels of productivity.

The CUDA architecture enables developers to use the CPU and the GPU together in a co-processing model. Compute-intensive sections of an application use the parallel computing capabilities of the GPU, while the sequential part of an application’s code runs on the CPU.

“The combination of GPUs and the Windows platform has been a great benefit to our VMD (Visual Molecular Dynamics) user community, bringing advanced molecular visualization and analysis capabilities to thousands of users,” said John Stone, senior research programmer at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. “As we move toward even larger biomolecular structures, GPUs will become increasingly important as they bring even more computational power to bear on what will be highly parallelizable computational problems.”

“The scientific community was one of the first to realize the potential of the GPU to transform its work, observing speedups ranging from 20 to 200 times while using a range of compute-intensive applications,” said Andy Keane, general manager of NVIDIA’s Tesla business. “Researchers are increasingly using Windows on workstations and in data centers due to strong development tools like Microsoft Visual Studio, its ease of system management and its lower total cost of ownership.”

NVIDIA Tesla high-performance GPU computing products support Windows XP and Windows Vista in the workstation and Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 in the data center. Tesla C1060 and S1070 GPU computing products are available from most major system vendors including Cray, Dell, HP and Lenovo.

Intel Corporation is asking young designers to explore out-of-the-box ideas on mobile computing as part of a University Design Expo held in conjunction with the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco.

Intel Corporation is asking young designers to explore out-of-the-box ideas on mobile computing as part of a University Design Expo held in conjunction with the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco. Intel sponsored students several colleges and universities around the world to explore creative new ways to bridge technology and design across the areas of user interaction, industrial design, and mobile applications and solutions. The projects have the potential to impact the broad spectrum of mobility – next-generation laptops to compact, pocketable handheld devices.

Design students are a valuable resource for re-thinking today’s usage of technology and discovering the possibilities for the future. The Design Expo explores the perspectives of these talented young designers who have an exciting vision for how technology can affect how we live, work and play.

By working with young designers who have a vision of how technology can complement and enhance people’s lives, Intel is gaining additional insight into new ways to bring the benefits of mobile technology to consumers. The concepts featured at the Design Expo have the potential to impact a broad spectrum of mobile computing – next generation laptops to pocketable, handheld devices and beyond.

“As the Internet goes mobile, people are looking for technology that is not only smaller, sleeker and smarter, but also a seamless and intuitive fit for complementing one’s lifestyle,” said Caleb Rabinowitz, mobile concepts planner, Intel Corporation. “By engaging with student designers, Intel is exploring new perspectives and seeing firsthand how design is increasingly essential to differentiating products and encouraging new applications of technology and user interaction.”

In order to bring to life the displays at this year’s Design Expo, Intel collaborated with leading professors and emerging young designers undergraduate and graduate schools around the world, and asked them to illustrate their visions for the future of mobile computing. The projects range cameras capturing a complete 180o panoramic view, to an application that measures and visualizes the emotional health of a specific area to data visualization expressed as art. The creativity combined with cutting edge technology is making for a fascinating, interactive exhibit.

“The Design Expo has a legacy that goes back more than 20 years, bringing innovative, fresh thinking today’s youth and tomorrow’s leaders to a variety of industries,” said S. Joy Mountford, consultant for user interface designs and innovation at Fortune 500 companies. “The Intel-sponsored Design Expo allows us to gain insight into new and creative uses of technology as well as identify talent for future design leaders. As a company that truly believes in sponsoring the best of what tomorrow has to offer, we believe that these students have brought some fresh thinking to technology design, for Intel and the industry-at-large.”

Intel has called on both U.S.-based and International schools to participate in the Design Expo including California College of Art, Delft University of Technology, Georgia Tech, Royal College of Art, UCLA and USC. Project teams each school were selected by their respective university professors and Intel to present their work.

The Design Expo is a recurring event that aims to highlight creativity and innovation in technology. Since the beginning of the Design Expo in 1988, 3,000 students have been involved.

The Design Expo is located in the Golden Gate Hall at the San Francisco Marriott, and will be open for viewing 4-6 p.m. on Sept. 21 and 10:15 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sept. 22.

ESET, the leader in proactive threat protection, has announced support for the Microsoft® Windows 7® operating system.

ESET, the leader in proactive threat protection, has announced support for the Microsoft® Windows 7® operating system. The complete line of ESET products – ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 and ESET Smart Security 4 (home and business editions), ESET Remote Administrator 3, SysInspector and ESET Online Scanner now fully support Microsoft’s new operating system.

According to Richard Marko, Chief Technology Officer at ESET, the changes that needed to be made in the products were minor and concerned mainly those features that are closely linked with the core of the operating system, namely ESET’s Self-defense and Anti-stealth technologies. Self-defense is a function that prevents computer infiltrations from deactivating or negatively affecting the computer’s security status. Anti-stealth is advanced technology that ESET has developed against rootkits.

In order to ensure full compatibility with Windows 7, ESET recommends that its customers download the newest installation packages for ESET Smart Security 4 and ESET NOD32 Antivirus, as well as ESET Remote Administrator 3 for business users. After downloading the above-mentioned products, it is recommended they be installed over existing copies.

ESET’s industry-leading products, including the popular NOD32 Antivirus and ESET Smart Security, deliver a significant improvement over traditional solutions in the marketplace today. Powered by ThreatSense® technology, ESET’s products combine speed, accuracy and minimal system impact. The advanced heuristics engine enables proactive detection of malware not covered by even the most frequently updated signature-based products. Unlike traditional approaches, ESET solutions use an emulated environment to decode and analyze executable code in real-time. By allowing malware to execute in a secure virtual machine, ESET is able to clearly differentiate between benign files and even the most sophisticated and cleverly-disguised malware.
